Speaking

I talk to business owners about the numbers nobody wants to look at.

Forty-one years running finance and operations, most of it spent discovering that the expensive problem was a process somebody inherited and was never given permission to question. Your members already suspect something in their business is off. I give them the questions that find it.

Topics

  • How to tell your chart of accounts is a messThe symptoms owners mistake for a bookkeeping problem when it is a structure problem. Members leave able to spot it in their own file that week.
  • Building a chart that answers the questions you actually askJob costing, margin by line, and why most charts cannot support either. Practical enough that people take notes.
  • Have you outgrown your systemsThe point where doing it the old way costs more than replacing it, and how to know you have passed it. Good for a room where half are about to spend money on software.
  • The WHY methodWhy "because we have always done it this way" is the sound of a leak, and how to go looking without making anyone the problem. Works for owners and their leadership teams in the same room.
  • What owners see versus what their teams seeBuilt on the WHY Audit and its Gap Report. The most uncomfortable session I run, and the one people talk about afterward.

Any chapter of the book works as a session. So does any of the lunch and learn material, which was written for exactly this format and comes with a handout for attendees.

Formats I do well: an open talk with real examples, a lunch and learn built around one narrow problem, and ask me anything, which is my favorite because owners bring the questions they are too proud to ask their own accountant.

I speak to owner groups, chambers, associations, peer advisory boards, and leadership teams. Audiences of ten and audiences of eight hundred both work.
